SUMMARY:Hawk Mountain Sanctuary - Penguin Adventure - Falkland Islands
DESCRIPTION:Penguin Adventure – Falkland Islands with Shawn Carey \nHawk Mountain Sanctuary\nSaturday October 4\, 2025\nTime: 5:30 PM \nThe Falkland Islands are located off the southern coast of Argentina and almost to the tip of Tierra Del Fuego. With one flight a week entering and departing the Falklands\, and a total of three days travel each way you have to really want to go there. We’re delighted to be hosting Shawn Carey on Tuesday\, September 17th\, to take us there. \nThe Falklands are a very remote South Atlantic archipelago with two main islands\, East and West Falkland\, plus an additional 776 smaller islands\, most of which are not inhabited. However\, several that are host some of the islands’ amazing wildlife\, including five species of penguins\, which on certain islands have thousands of birds during the nesting season. \nFor bird watchers and wildlife photographers with an interest in the birds found here you can see 63 nesting species including 14 endemic subspecies and two endemic species\, the Falkland Steamer Duck and the Cobb’s Wren. In addition to the bird life there are also both Southern Elephant Seals and Southern Sealions which can be seen in large numbers on a few islands. \nFor this program we will explore two locations on Saunders Islands\, The Neck\, which has three nesting penguin species plus nesting Black-browed Albatross. Then onto The Rookery with its impressive colony of Southern Rockhopper Penguins and a staggering number of Black-browed Albatross. After that we will explore Sealion Island and our first look at Elephant Seals\, Sealions and the Killer Whales that prowl the waters looking to feast on them. Next up is Bleaker Island with its beautiful mile long beach where you can watch Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins as they ride the waves onto the sandy shores. Finally\, we will end our photographic adventure at Volunteer Point which has the largest nesting King Penguin population in the Falklands. \nAll of this plus a look at the lodges one can stay at\, the food and some of the people you will meet along the way. I will share my advice on traveling to this fantastic location plus many tips to help you plan your own Penguin adventure to the Falkland Islands.\nSouthern Elephant Seal \nStriated CaracaraSea Lion Island\, Falkland Islands

SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club - Iceland - Grimsby & Flatey Islands
DESCRIPTION:Iceland – Grimsby & Flatey Islands with Shawn Carey \nNew Haven Bird Club\nLocation: Whitney Center\n200 Leeder Hill Drive\nHamden\, CT 06517 \nDate: Thursday October 9\, 2025 \nTime: 7:00 PM \nIceland Land of Midnight Sun – Grimsey & Flatey Island \nIceland abounds in natural splendor: Waterfalls and glaciers\, panoramic views\, and otherworldly landscapes. It is a land of Northern Lights and midnight sun. And it is the realm of one of the world’s most charming and iconic bird: the Atlantic Puffin. \nBut Iceland is home to much more. During the summer months\, Iceland’s round-the-clock sunlight draws in a panoply of birds: Razorbills and guillemots\, phalaropes and godwits\, plovers and terns\, all accompany the puffins in nesting frenzy. Come along with wildlife photographer and Mass Audubon instructor Shawn Carey as he shares images\, and stories from his journey spent on two Icelandic islands. We will visit Grimsey Island\, the northern most inhabited island off the mainland of Iceland. For bird photographers and bird watchers looking for a great place to view and photograph nesting seabirds that call this island home during the summer this is a place you want to visit. \nFrom Grimsey we will travel to the island of Flatey\, a real hidden gem for bird photographers and bird watchers alike. Most people pass through Flatey (via ferry service out of Stykkisholmur) on their way to the well-known Latrabjarg bird cliffs to see Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills. However\, for those that have or take the time to explore Flatey you will find a small island that offers some very good photographic opportunities\, especially for Black Guillemot\, Red-necked Phalarope and Common Redshank just to name a few. \nIf you are planning a birding or bird photography trip to Iceland\, I would add Grimsey and Flatey island to your travel itinerary. Both are enjoyable places to spend several days.\nAtlantic Puffin – Grimsey IslandCanon R3 + Canon 600mm – Gitzo tripod with FlexShooter head
