SUMMARY:Bird Photography Master Class
DESCRIPTION:Bird Photography Master Class with Shawn Carey & Mike Milicia \nLocation: Mass Audubon Museum of American Bird Art\, Canton\, MA \nSaturday November 16\, 2024 \nShawn Carey and Michael Milicia will lead this one-day classroom seminar crammed with tips and techniques that will help bring your avian imagery to the next level. \nMike and Shawn will be prepared to discuss a wide range of topics including fieldcraft\, composition\, exposure\, metering\, autofocus\, histograms\, minimizing noise\, camera setup\, flight photography\, video\, tripods\, lenses\, long lens technique\, sharpness\, light angles\, bird behavior\, poses\, head angles\, hot spot locations\, travel tips\, and more. \nPlease note that any detailed discussion of camera settings and behavior will be oriented toward mirrorless camera bodies. Due to advances in mirrorless technology and its many enormous advantages over DSLRs\, it has become the dominant and preferred choice for bird and wildlife photography. DSLR users will still benefit from many topics which are not camera-specific and will also come to understand the reasons why mirrorless cameras are taking over. \nThe exact content for the day will be guided in large part by questions and/or topic suggestions that registered attendees will be invited to submit in advance. We will do our best to make the content and presentation suitable for both beginners and more experienced bird photographers. \nRoseate Spoonbill\, Myakka River State Park

SUMMARY:Cape Cod Viewfinders - Zoom - Iceland: Grimsey & Flatey Islands
DESCRIPTION:Cape Cod Viewfinders (Zoom) \nWednesday November 6\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 PM \nIceland Land of Midnight Sun – Grimsey & Flatey Island \nIceland abounds in natural splendor: Waterfalls and glaciers\, panoramic views\, and otherworldly landscapes. It is a land of Northern Lights and midnight sun. And it is the realm of one of the world’s most charming and iconic bird: the Atlantic Puffin. \nBut Iceland is home to much more. During the summer months\, Iceland’s round-the-clock sunlight draws in a panoply of birds: Razorbills and guillemots\, phalaropes and godwits\, plovers and terns\, all accompany the puffins in nesting frenzy. Come along with wildlife photographer and Mass Audubon instructor Shawn Carey as he shares images\, and stories from his journey spent on two Icelandic islands. We will visit Grimsey Island\, the northern most inhabited island off the mainland of Iceland. For bird photographers and bird watchers looking for a great place to view and photograph nesting seabirds that call this island home during the summer this is a place you want to visit. \nFrom Grimsey we will travel to the island of Flatey\, a real hidden gem for bird photographers and bird watchers alike. Most people pass through Flatey (via ferry service out of Stykkisholmur) on their way to the well-known Latrabjarg bird cliffs to see Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills. However\, for those that have or take the time to explore Flatey you will find a small island that offers some very good photographic opportunities\, especially for Black Guillemot\, Red-necked Phalarope and Common Redshank just to name a few. \nIf you are planning a birding or bird photography trip to Iceland\, I would add Grimsey and Flatey island to your travel itinerary. Both are enjoyable places to spend a several days. \nAtlantic Puffin – Grimsey IslandCanon R3 + Canon 600mm – Gitzo tripod with FlexShooter head

We’re delighted to be hosting Shawn Carey on Tuesday\, September 17th\, to take us there. \nThe Falklands are a very remote South Atlantic archipelago with two main islands\, East and West Falkland\, plus an additional 776 smaller islands\, most of which are not inhabited. In addition to the bird life there are also both Southern Elephant Seals and Southern Sealions which can be seen in large numbers on a few islands. \nFor this program we will explore two locations on Saunders Islands\, The Neck\, which has three nesting penguin species plus nesting Black-browed Albatross. Then onto The Rookery with its impressive colony of Southern Rockhopper Penguins and a staggering number of Black-browed Albatross. After that we will explore Sealion Island and our first look at Elephant Seals\, Sealions and the Killer Whales that prowl the waters looking to feast on them. Next up is Bleaker Island with its beautiful mile long beach where you can watch Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins as they ride the waves onto the sandy shores. Finally\, we will end our photographic adventure at Volunteer Point which has the largest nesting King Penguin population in the Falklands. \nAll of this plus a look at the lodges one can stay at\, the food and some of the people you will meet along the way. A crucial thread ties them together: each one has an advocate committed to protecting it and educating others about its plight. Migration Productions’ latest work\, “A Wing And A Care\,” opens a window onto the lives of these three birds\, and introduces you to the men dedicated to their preservation and survival.\n \n \n For more than 30 years\, Norman Smith has been studying Snowy Owls. Through his Snowy Owl Project\, which he started in 1981\, Smith has banded and released 700 birds\, shedding light on migration routes\, learning their habits\, and gaining insight into their lifestyles. Along the way\, Smith has given countless public presentations in his relentless effort to promote Snowy Owl conservation. \n \nFour decades ago\, Dr. Stephen Kress founded Project Puffin with the goal of restoring Atlantic Puffins to Maine’s Eastern Egg Rock—a historical breeding site that had been empty of puffins for nearly a century. Thanks to Dr. Kress’ vision and more than half a lifetime of dedicated and tireless work\, he has done what many thought impossible: the Puffins are back\, and Eastern Egg Rock is once again home to a thriving colony of these delightful birds. \n \nTom Sayers is a retired schoolteacher and keen observer of the natural world. Deeply involved in the Connecticut birding community\, Sayers began to see a sharp decline in the local population of American Kestrels. In 2010\, Sayers took action\, launching a groundbreaking program to establish and monitor Kestrel nest boxes\, banding each year’s new birds. Over the course of eight seasons\, he’s banded over 1000 Kestrels\, collecting valuable data and shining a light on the habits and health of this magnificent falcon.

In a region abundant with wildlife\, perhaps no country is as celebrated as Tanzania. Home to the world famous Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park\, Tanzania is a nature enthusiast’s paradise. \nFor this special presentation\, join wildlife photographer Shawn Carey on an adventure into the heart of Tanzania. We’ll take a safari vehicle into the country’s spectacular national parks and see the “Big Five”—African Elephant\, Black Rhino\, Cape Buffalo\, Lion\, and Leopard—in all their glory. Along the way\, we’ll search for and photograph Cheetahs\, Giraffes\, Black-backed Jackals\, and Hippos. And we’ll encounter a panoply of Tanzania’s wonderful and amazing birds\, including the Greater Flamingo\, Lilac-breasted Roller\, Little Bee-eater\, Giant Kingfisher\, and Grey-crowned Crane—the country’s national bird. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting East Africa and its incredible wildlife\, this is a journey you’ll never forget. And it may just have you planning your own African adventure. \nLion\, Ngorongoro Crater\, Tanzania

SUMMARY:Forbush Bird Club: A Wing and a Care
DESCRIPTION:A Wing and a Care\nForbush Bird Club\nAnnual Dinner Event\nThursday April 26\, 2018\nTime: 6:00 PM \nSnowy Owls\, Atlantic Puffins\, and American Kestrels are connected by more than simply a resemblance of form or function. A crucial thread ties them together: each one has an advocate committed to protecting it and educating others about its plight. Migration Productions’ latest work\, “A Wing And A Care\,” opens a window onto the lives of these three birds\, and introduces you to the men dedicated to their preservation and survival. \n“A Wing And A Care” follows the stories of these three men as they work to protect the birds they love\, and shows how a single individual can make a world of difference in the life of a bird. And it asks a critical question: how can each one of us get involved and help build a better future for these incredible birds?
